Happy New Year to all!
We take advantage of the small tropical depression currently passing over the Society Islands to take the time to share some news. After quick and efficient repairs on the boom in Raiatea, we celebrate Christmas at the coral garden of Tahaa, where snorkeling is nice and easy for the children. A short night of sailing then takes us to Maupiti, 40 miles to the west, which we had already visited in 2019. We reunite with our friends from the sailboat Petrouchka, whom we met in Patagonia and Antarctica, to celebrate the New Year! The island is still as pleasant, and some residents recognize us as we walk through the village... We had helped them with a delivery to the neighboring island of Mopelia, which is rarely serviced. Still very welcoming, they come aboard to supply us with fresh fruit; it’s mango season, and we’re enjoying it! It’s time to return to Raiatea for provisioning before the grandparents arrive, who are supposed to join us in the Tuamotus if Covid allows...
The bad weather of the past few days forces us to take shelter on Tahaa’s sister island in Hamene Bay. We are under red alert until tomorrow noon, and the rainfall rate is impressive. Luckily, we are anchored in front of the village’s small library, very useful in rainy weather!
