Sitka, Alaska

Sitka, Alaska, USA For about ten days, we have been in Sitka, our port of entry into the USA located on the southern coast of Alaska. A little over 2 days of sailing downwind from Canada along the coast, and we are greeted by a beautiful blue sky revealing the snow-capped peaks of Sitka Sound and the impressive Mount Edgecumbe, an extinct volcano. The pleasant town of 6000 inhabitants is preparing for the arrival of tourists for the peak season, but it is still early, so we are quietly enjoying the facilities and numerous hiking trails that start not far from the center. The promise of playing in the snow at the summit motivates the children to climb, and sliding down is faster! We meet Erik and his family, who kindly invite us to moor at their dock at the foot of their property overlooking Thimbleberry Bay. The children spend their time fishing for herring that come to spawn in the bay, turning the sea completely milky with their eggs. Eggs that we can harvest from the kelp and eat raw or as caviar! We are now waiting for a favorable weather window to cross the Gulf of Alaska and reach Kodiak Island, 500 miles to the west.
