East Falkland

We need to rediscover the joy of sailing, exploring new places, meeting people... The disappointment of missing South Georgia weighs on us—it’ll take time to digest.

We’re focusing on future Patagonian channels and Pacific islands, hoping to reach them in a few months.

For now, we’re stuck in the Falklands waiting for cargo delayed over a month...

We’re coastal cruising East Falkland, which we missed last year. Windy, rainy weather makes sailing uncomfortable and shore walks short. But wildlife delivers: gentoo, jackass, and macaroni penguins, giant petrels, cormorants, sea lions, Commerson’s dolphins... and of course, iconic sheep and lambs.

We anchored at Sparrow Cove, Pyramide Cove, and Seal Cove before Bleaker Island, hosted by Phil, Nick, and Mike at their lodge. Then Fanny Cove’s white sand beach, where we swam among gentoos nesting in the hills. Dropped Mathieu at North Arm village for his flight to France. The 20 residents focus on 70,000 sheep—far more rural than touristy islands. Sun returned, allowing downwind sails. After two nights at Barren Island, we sailed the sound separating the Falklands’ two main islands, anchoring at San Carlos by night. Rolling hills contrast with the flat southeast. Next day, a spring-like climb to Race Point’s “summit” (a modest 200m). Felt good to gain height! Next day, we sailed for Stanley, hoping to finally collect our gear... still waiting.
