We stayed 5 days in Ushuaia, the capital of Tierra del Fuego, nestled at the foot of the Martial Glacier. Though the town itself isn’t charming, the snow-capped peaks surrounding it make our stop at the Afasyn dock very pleasant, especially since the good weather continues. Once shopping, laundry, boat maintenance, and formalities were done, we left on Tuesday, April 4, for Puerto Williams on Navarino Island, the gateway to Chile. A 25-mile downwind sail with favorable currents allowed us to quickly reach the famous Micalvi dock, alongside many boats wintering here—just as we plan to do. This Chilean naval base is opening more to tourism because this is truly the place that deserves the title "town at the end of the world," and especially because the immediate surroundings offer hikes through absolutely stunning landscapes. though it doesn’t stick, it’s always a joy to wake up to a light dusting on deck... We spent three nights here before leaving for a few days to explore the different caletas (anchorages) of the islands further south, including Horn Island... Tonight, we’re in Caleta Tres Mares, 13 miles east, a very sheltered anchorage surrounded by trees in the fiery colors of autumn—and it’s pancake night!
